Petra: The Rose City and the Timeless Wonder of the World

Historical Wonders

Overview

Petra is the crown jewel of Jordanian heritage and one of the world's greatest archaeological sites. Carved into rose-colored rock with breathtaking engineering skill, this city is not merely a silent ruin, but a living testament to the genius of ancient Arabs and their ability to tame harsh nature.

1. History and Origins: The Great Nabataean Kingdom

One cannot talk about Petra without talking about its builders: Nabataeans.

Who were the Nabataeans?
They are Arab Bedouin tribes who settled in southern Jordan more than 2000 years ago. They transitioned from a nomadic lifestyle to building a settled commercial and agricultural civilization.

• Trade capital:
The Nabataeans made Petra the capital of their kingdom. Thanks to its strategic location, they controlled the trade caravan routes (the Incense and Spice Route) coming from the Arabian Peninsula, which made them extremely wealthy.

• Engineering genius (water system):
Petra was not just beautiful facades; it was a hydraulic marvel. The Nabataeans devised complex systems of dams and canals to collect rainwater, allowing the city to flourish in the middle of the desert.

• Falling and rediscovering:
Petra fell to the Romans in 106 AD. The city remained "lost" to the Western world for centuries, until it was rediscovered in 1812 by the Swiss orientalist Johann Ludwig Burckhardt.

2. The most important landmarks within the ancient city

Petra is a huge city, and some of its most prominent and unmissable landmarks include:

• The Siq:
A majestic natural rock fissure that stretches for more than a kilometer, its towering walls twisting in colors ranging from pink to red, is the main entrance to the city.

• The Treasury:
The most enchanting moment; an intricately carved facade 40 meters high. It was named the Treasury because the Bedouin believed there was treasure in its upper jar.

• The Nabataean amphitheater:
A huge amphitheater carved into the rock that could accommodate thousands of spectators, demonstrating a vibrant cultural life.

• The Monastery:
Reaching it requires climbing about 800 steps, but the view from the top is breathtaking.

• Royal tombs:
A series of ornately facaded mausoleums carved into the mountains to commemorate the Nabataean kings.
